KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City is hoping to entice visitors this year with some new attractions and important milestone anniversaries.

This summer, Powell Gardens expects to open the 12-acre Heartland Harvest Garden, where everything is edible and visitors can learn about the path of food from seed to plate; powellgardens.com.

Also this summer the giant Schlitterbahn water park in Kansas City, Kan., is opening one of the world's largest tubing parks, with miles of interconnected rivers and attractions and an uphill water coaster; schlitterbahn.com/kc.

In the fall of 2009, the Advertising Icon Museum is expected to be completed, offering a look at how advertising shapes our lives and showcasing a large collection of 3-D advertising figures; advertisingiconmuseum.com. The museum is part of a development built by Bernstein-Rein Advertising a block west of the Country Club Plaza that includes the company's headquarters, a boutique hotel, a restaurant and auditorium.

Worlds of Fun amusement park will be adding a seventh roller coaster, the wooden Prowler, scheduled to open April 18.

The Kansas City Zoo turns 100 in 2009, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in December kicked off a year-long celebration of its 75th anniversary.

For sports fans, the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship takes place in Kansas City March 19 and 21. The city is also home to the College Basketball Experience and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame; collegebasketballexperience.com. In baseball, the Kansas City Royals' renovated Kauffman Stadium has a home opener April 10. Those with an interest in bike races will be watching the Tour of Missouri, which Kansas City takes part in, Sept. 7-13.
