TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Traverse City's annual February winter carnival coincides this year with the North American Vasa Festival of Races, a cross-country ski event, on the weekend of Feb. 13-16.

The Vasa, in its 33rd year, offers a picturesque course for ski racers through Pere Marquette State Forest. The main competition, which features 12K, 27K and 50K races in both freestyle and classic modes, takes place Feb. 14, with 6K and 16K races Sunday.

The Cherry Capital Winter WonderFest, which was held for the first time in 2007, offers more than 50 activities and events, including sleigh rides, concerts, films, tastings, bonfires and fireworks over the snow.

A Winter Fun Zone will feature ice skating, pony rides, inflatable play structures, dogsleds, snowmobiles, snowshoeing and recreational cross-country skiing. There will also be a foot race, a kid's snowshoe race, a frozen fish toss and a "Polar Plunge" where participants jump in an icy pond to raise money for charity.

Most of the events take place on the grounds of the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. But nearby Mt. Holiday Ski Area will also host a few programs, such as a snowboarding "rail jam" event, a mountain bike race down the ski hill and a "Cardboard Bobsled-o-Rama" in which competitors use sleds made with cardboard, tape and paint.

In Traverse City's downtown, a "Save the Bees" dessert reception will feature local honey and a concert by Sweet Honey in the Rock at the City Opera House. Other events include ice carving and snow sculpture displays, a "frozen bed race" and a contest in which participants slurp soups made by local chefs and vote on their favorites.
